The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Whirlpool Corp. announced a voluntary recall of more than 40,000 refrigerators.
According to repair.maytag.com, 46,000 Maytag, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand refrigerators are being recalled because an electrical failure in the relay — the component that turns on the refrigerator's compressor — can overheat and poses a fire hazard.
- Locate the model and serial number label on the appliance. Look on the back of a washer or dryer for the paper label. On a freezer or refrigerator, the label may be located on the inside, either.
- Sep 13, 2015 Magic Chef® How to determine the date of production/manufacture or age of Magic Chef® HVAC Systems. The date of production/manufacture or age of Magic Chef® Brand HVAC equipment can be determined from the serial number located on the data plate.
- If your refrigerator's model and serial number combination is not listed, it is not affected by this recall and you may continue to use it safely. If you have questions or need further verification after reviewing the model and serial number combinations, you may contact Maytag Corporation toll-free at 1-866-533-9817 Monday - Friday 8am-8pm.
Look on the back of a washer or dryer for the paper label. On a freezer or refrigerator, the label may be located on the inside, either on the liner or on the side of the door. Check the model. To locate the model number, check the side of the motor casing, the back near the handle, or on the bottom of the casing. Sample Model Number Tags Model numbers can be made up of numbers (1005400, for example) or a combination of letters and numbers (LAT1000AAE).
The recall includes certain side-by-side and top freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. They have model and serial numbers printed on a label located on the top middle or left upper side of the refrigerator liner and have the following model and serial number combinations:
•Side-by-side refrigerators: Serial numbers ending with CN, CP, YY, YZ and model numbers begininning with MZ
• Top freezer refrigerators: Serial numbers ending with CA, CC, CE, CG, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH and model numbers begininng with CT15G4, CTB152, CTL151, CTM152, CTN151, MTB195, MTB215, MTB245, MTF195, MTF215, PTB155, PTB175, PTB195 and PTB215.
Whirlpool has received 23 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including four reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
In addition to the recalls announced Tuesday, 1.6 million refrigerators were recalled in March for the same issue.
